Whether or not to “tell” about your disability is one of the most common questions we get asked. For each student whether they decide to disclose or not is an entirely personal choice and should be treated as such. We’re currently working on a guide about this issue which will be available shortly.
Many students will receive some form of support while in college and they may be keen to receive a similar type of support in the workplace. There are a number of grants aimed at facilitating these supports. Most of them come through FÁS and you can find out more about them by clicking the following link: FÁS Allowances and Grants
The Employment Equality Act prohibits discrimination in areas such as advertising, pay, access to employment, vocational training work experience and promotion terms and conditions of employment. An employer is obliged to take appropriate measures to enable a person who has a disability: to have access to employment, to participate or advance in employment, to undertake training, unless the measures would impose a disproportionate burden on the employer. It is worth being familiar with the basic aspects of this legislation. For more information click on the Equality Authority website link
AHEAD also runs two projects relevant to students and graduates with disabilities, GET AHEAD & WAM. Amongst other things, GET AHEAD provides in-depth career training through its Get Ready 4 Work training and WAM facilitates mentored work placements.
This is by no means an exhaustive resource, and we will continue to update this area of the site.
