Libraries

The library is an integral part of the college and one of the most important resources available to students. Library staff are available to help with information or research queries and are generally aware of the specific library needs of students with disabilities.

LIBRARY TOUR

Students with disabilities should get to know the library structures as early as possible in their college career. There are two options open to students who wish to do this; visit the library before the beginning of term and become familiar with its structures and policy, or participate in the library tour provided especially for first year students at the beginning of the academic year. This tour is given by a member of the library staff and informs you of lending and borrowing procedures, how to use the On-line catalogue (computerised library catalogue) CD-ROM etc. Students with specific disability related needs should make themselves known to a member of the library staff as early as possible in the academic year and discuss appropriate measures to ensure maximum use of the library. The support provided for students with disabilities in each college library will vary. The following library facilities are provided in some, but not all, third level institutions in Ireland.

READER SERVICE

Some of the larger institutions provide this service for students with disabilities. Texts are read and recorded on audio-tape either by volunteers or paid staff. These tapes are kept in a catalogue and used by students.

'SPECIAL' NEEDS ROOM

Some libraries provide a specific room for students with disabilities where specialised equipment is stored and can be used, i.e. voice synthesiser computers, scanners, and CCTV (closed-circuit T.V.). The 'special' needs room can also be used for study purposes, providing a comfortable study environment for students with disabilities.

EXTENDED LENDING

Some libraries offer extended lending time to students with disabilities. Students must negotiate with the head of the library for this provision.

PHOTOCOPYING

Some libraries provide assistance in photocopying, freeing students with disabilities from queues for this service. Students with disabilities may also receive reduced rates on photocopying cards.

NAMED MEMBER OF LIBRARY STAFF

Some libraries provide a support person specifically for students with disabilities. This person can assist in locating books and journals, and can also issue books to the student. This service is offered when the shelves or aisles in the library are not accessible to the student, and is particularly useful to students with a mobility impairment. If your third level institution does not provide a support that you require, you should feel free to ask for it, either directly from the head of library services, or through the named member of library staff or the Disability / Access Officer.
