An Accessible Curriculum - A Learning Resource Pack for Academic Staff in Third Level on Making Curriculum Accessible for Students with Disabilities or Specific Learning Difficulties

Written by AHEAD

This training handbook was developed by AHEAD in partnership with Dublin Institute of Technology and University College Cork with funding provided by the National Disability Authority. The handbook is intended to act as a resource for third level academic staff and Disability Officers wishing to develop their awareness of disability issues and improve practice in relation to students with disabilities.

The materials are designed to encourage staff to reflect on their individual and departmental practice and to consider what changes need to be made in order to deliver a more effective service to students with a range of disabilities. The broad aims of the handbook are to focus service providers on the individual student rather than on their disability, to develop an understanding of appropriate methods of communication and to create an awareness of the need to be proactive in delivering a curriculum, which is accessible to all students.

As you work through the handbook, you will find questionnaires, activities and key learning points designed to make you think about making your curriculum and classroom more accessible. Each module has a set of clearly defined objectives and includes practical guidance on creating an accessible curriculum for all students.
