Session 1: The Calm Zone: Innovating Accessibility Through Student Leadership [Wicklow Hall 2]

The University of Galway collaborates with neurodivergent students to provide a pop-up "Calm Zone" that supports sensory regulation and overall well-being, particularly for neurodivergent students, at large-scale campus events such as First-Year Orientation and high-stress periods like exam season.

The Calm Zone is designed, developed, and delivered in partnership with the Neurodivergent Student Society, the Neurodivergent Staff Network, the Access Centre, and the Galway Autism Partnership. It is staffed by neurodivergent student ambassadors, providing them with paid part-time employment. The direct involvement of neurodivergent students in designing and planning the Calm Zone, including contributing to formal funding applications, offers valuable CV-building opportunities.

In this panel discussion, four of these Calm Zone ambassadors will share their experiences in designing, developing, and delivering the initiative for the benefit of all University of Galway students, as well as the opportunities and insights they have gained through this work. This panel will explore the vital role of integrating students' lived experiences into service design and policy to enhance accessibility and inclusivity.
