Preparation and Performance: Supporting Students with Intellectual Disabilities in Internships [Meeting 1]
People with intellectual disabilities are significantly underrepresented in tertiary education and in employment. TCPID offers students with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to attend college and then participate in a paid internship and engage in meaningful employment. This workshop outlines the pathway for students from entering the course up to completing their internship. The pathway outlines the supports given to students, lecturers, employers and other stakeholders. The types of practical supports given throughout the internships are described, as is the learning that occurs during the process.
This workshop will describe in detail the type of interventions provided by the Occupational Therapy team, college inclusion, the context of employment and the development of this employment framework of partnership by the Pathways Coordinator. The workshop will describe the process of developing this pathway from learning that has occurred over the years and how students and employers are centrally involved in this.
