Dara Ryder CEO, AHEAD
Dara Ryder is Chief Executive Officer of AHEAD, having previously managed AHEAD’s digital presence and developed a suite of online CPD programmes relating to inclusive practice in his role as Digital Media and eLearning Manager there.
After graduating from Queens University in 2005, Dara joined Dun Laoghaire College of Further Education as a lecturer, where he became interested in inclusive education when working first-hand with students with disabilities in his classroom. When the opportunity arose in 2008, he joined AHEAD where he has been working ever since on creating inclusive environments in education and employment for people with disabilities.

Nessa White SOLAS
Nessa White is Interim CEO in SOLAS, the Further Education and Training (FET) Authority. Nessa has worked in various Executive Director roles in SOLAS since 2020 and has over 20 years of senior leadership experience in the education and health sectors. During her time in SOLAS Nessa has driven strategic reform, innovation, and collaboration across the FET sector. One of her priorities as Interim CEO is to ensure that FET becomes a key provider of lifelong learning opportunities in Ireland.
Prior to taking up roles in SOLAS, Nessa worked in the Department of Education as a Project Manager for the Education and Training Board (ETB) - SOLAS Project Management Office leading out on initiatives focused on reform. She also played a key part in driving ongoing change and shared vision of Education and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI) and was appointed General Secretary of ETBI in May 2018.
Throughout her career Nessa has gained extensive experience and expertise, especially in the areas of change management, strategic thinking and leading people.

Professor Paul Harpur OAM is a leading international and comparative disability rights legal academic, current Australian Research Council Future Fellow, leader in higher education reforms, an Associate with the Harvard Law School Project on Disability, and duel Paralympian.
Professor Harpur is a leader in disability research and directs the University of Queensland’s The Disability Collaboratory. Beyond this, he holds international posts, including as an Associate with the Harvard Law School's Harvard Project on Disability, an International Distinguished Fellow, with the Burton Blatt Institute, Syracuse University, Berkeley Center on Comparative Equality and Anti-Discrimination Law, and is a former Fulbright Future Scholar.

Victoria co-chairs the University EDI Disability and Inclusion Sub-Committee, is Policy Officer for the Accessible and Inclusive Learning Policy and sits on the Academic Policy and Regulations Committee for the University.

Maureen works with educational development teams to design and implement inclusive education practices at regional and national levels. She is the programme chair and Lecturer on the Post Graduate Certificate/ MA in UDL.

Dr Lindsay Malone is the Chief Executive of Kilkenny and Carlow Education and Training Board (KCETB). She brings over twenty years of leadership experience across further and higher education, previously serving as Director of Further Education and Training with WWETB and Deputy Head of the Faculty of Lifelong Learning at SETU Carlow. A passionate advocate for lifelong learning, social justice, and widening participation, she has lectured across BA and MA programmes. A Tramore native, she holds degrees in Applied Social Studies, Teaching and Learning, Child, Youth and Family Studies, and a PhD in Education and Social Justice.

Dr Deirdre Mc Hugh is the Universal Design Manager and Access Officer at the University of Galway and is based in the Office of the Vice-President for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. Her recent work on Universal Design (UD) of the built environment, her background in educational development, and over a decade of experience as a university teacher, give her key insights into how accessibility barriers can impact learning.
Collaboration is central to Deirdre’s work, and she has worked with colleagues and students across units and functions in her home institution on a range of projects to improve accessibility and embed UD, and on national projects, including the development of the ALTITUDE Charter for UD in Tertiary Education. Her work is informed by the lived experience of students, colleagues and members of the public who experience barriers to accessibility and inclusion. She has presented her work at international conferences, including UD2024 and the European Access Network (EAN) Conference 2024. She was the conference lead on the EAN 2025 Conference, hosted by University of Galway in June 2025, in partnership with the Centre for Excellence in Universal Design, part of the National Disability Authority, and they will continue this partnership to co-host the 8th International Biennial Conference in Universal Design, UD2026 in November 2026.Niamh Plunkett, Atlantic Technological UniversityHelena Farrell Cork Education and Training Board (CETB)

With a prior background in healthcare, Helena brings to Universal Design a strong commitment to social justice and a human centred approach, with emphasis on co-creation, learner voice, and sustainable systems change. She holds post grad qualifications in special & inclusive education, educational leadership and is currently completing a Masters of Education, where her dissertation looks at the learner experience of UDL interventions in further education.

Niamh leads the strategic planning and delivery of academic support and educational development at ATU, advancing excellence in teaching and learning across the institution. She oversees the UDL Centre of Excellence, the Advance HE–ATU ENGAGE Programme, and the Academic Support Centres. Niamh holds degrees in Nursing, Management and Education, including a Doctorate in Education, and is a Principal Fellow of Advance HE.

Dr Suzanne Stone is an experienced academic developer currently working as Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Lead at the University of Limerick. This role involves driving the University strategic aim to ensure accessibility to the university learning experience for all students by embedding and enacting UDL in programme design and delivery. Before joining UL, Suzanne worked as an academic developer and learning technologist, accruing considerable experience in higher education. Specific areas of expertise include scholarship of teaching and learning; digital learning; embedding digital technologies in teaching, learning and assessment; digital accessibility and universal design for learning. Research experience also includes digital well-being; social media in education; student partnership; GenAI in education; large cohort teaching and learning; and digital assessment.

Aideen Hunter is a Senior Lecturer at Ulster University and a sector- leading specialist in inclusive practice and neurodiversity within Further Education. With over two decades of experience in teacher education, she has driven major regional initiatives to enhance professional development for FE practitioners, including pioneering new provision in neuroinclusive practice and reasonable adjustments.
Aideen currently leads several large-scale Department for the Economy- funded projects supporting neurodiversity- inclusive pedagogy across the FET sector in Northern Ireland. Her work focuses on translating research into practical, accessible professional learning that empowers educators and support staff to creat equitable, universally designed learning environments.

Dr John Harding has been Head of the Accessibility & Disability Resource Centre (ADRC) at the University of Cambridge since 2008. The ADRC is Cambridge’s service for disabled students and those staff working with disabled students. John is also a member of the University’s Disabled Staff Network, and Secretary of the University’s Accessibility Committee and a trustee of two small charities who make grants to disabled students. John is a Senior Accredited Member and Company Secretary of the UK’s National Association of Disability Practitioners (NADP) as well as an Adviser to the Board and Reviewing Panel Chair on the NADP accreditation scheme. John also sits on the Office for Students Disability in Higher Education Expert Panel.
John has worked as a practitioner and managed teams of specialists in the field of disability support and inclusive practice in both further and higher education for over twenty years. During that time, he has worked on the development more inclusive and supportive policies in relation to disabled students, including the promotion of Universal Design for Learning and inclusive pedagogical design and practices. John holds a PGCE in adult literacy, a masters in international development, the postgraduate diploma in teaching and assessing specific learning difficulties and completed his doctorate in education at the University of Cambridge.

Anne Marie also worked as a technical advisor on Disability Inclusive Employment Practices in Public Employment Services in the Middle East. She is currently a Board Member with the European Platform for Rehabilitation.

Laura Bowler is a theatre director and educator with extensive experience in directing, teaching, and mentoring. She lectures in Theatre and Film Practice at Dundalk Institute of Technology, where she has developed modules such as Women in Theatre and Devising Practices, and regularly directs student productions.
In addition to her academic work, Laura mentors Chalk on the Wall Theatre Company, a young collective in residence at An Táin Arts Centre. Her mentorship involves guiding the company in all aspects of professional theatre-making, from rehearsals to production management, and providing directorial support to emerging artists.
Through her work, Laura focuses on the intersection of creativity, education, and social engagement in contemporary theatre practice.

Elizabeth Hitches is an advocate for accessible and inclusive practice, holding workshops with universities, government departments, and communities of practice internationally. Her research is currently exploring academic stress in higher education, and how this can be reduced in inclusive and accessible ways through a UDL lens. Her research interests lie in inclusive education at a national and international level, as well as equity, achievement, and wellbeing for students with disability and/or accessibility requirements (Explore Elizabeth's research here). Elizabeth is a co-host of the ADCET ILOTA Things podcast exploring accessibility and universal design for learning (ULD) in the age of AI. She is a PhD candidate at the Institute for Social Science Research, University of Queensland, Australia. She is also a sessional academic teaching inclusive education across various universities, and a teacher of research methods at the University of Queensland. Elizabeth is a staff member of ADCET, a national faculty member of CAST, and an associate fellow of the higher education academy.

Donald Ewing has worked as an educational psychologist for twenty years in a variety of settings including early years, primary and secondary school and third-level settings. He holds an accredited postgraduate professional qualification in Educational Psychology from the University of Dundee and is a Chartered Psychologist with the Psychological Society of Ireland. Donald is a previous chairperson of the Psychological Society of Ireland’s Division of Educational Psychology and is an associate fellow of the British Psychological Society.
Donald trained at post-graduate level in primary education at the University of Edinburgh and has worked as a teacher in a range of settings in the UK, Ireland and Japan. He has worked with the Dyslexia Association of Ireland (DAI) since 2012. Donald has worked in policy roles in central government with the Department of Education and Skills in the Scottish Government; and the Department of Children and Youth and the National Council for Special Education (NCSE) in Ireland.

Léan Lynch is a dedicated and experienced educator holding a BA and HDip, with specialist training in educational assessment, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), mental health first aid, equality and inclusion, and consent education. She taught for three decades and serves as Assistant Principal with responsibility for student vetting. Dr. Jack Saad is a Lecturer in Automation and Robotics at Atlantic Technological University (ATU), teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Automation and Digital Manufacturing. His background combines hands-on industrial robotics and simulation tools, with previous industry experience as an R&D Engineer at CGControls and research collaboration with CSIRO (Australia) on 3D laser scanning for autonomous systems. Beyond technical teaching, Jack is actively engaged in innovative and inclusive learning initiatives. He leads ATU’s participation in the global “Invent for the Planet” (IFTP) design sprint and is the founder of Aristo Academy, a STEAM initiative promoting robotics and creative engineering education for young learners in Egypt. His work connects engineering, innovation, and inclusive education practice.

Maureen Haran, Lecturer, PhD(c), SFHEA, manages the UDL Centre of Excellence at Atlantic Technological University (ATU). Maureen has over 23 years of experience in inclusive education in the Irish and American public education systems. She is the programme chair and lecturer on the Post Graduate Certificate/MA in UDL. Currently, Maureen is in the final stages of a PhD study in Education at Queens University Belfast. A national UDL leader, Maureen works with educational development teams to design and implement inclusive education practices at regional and national levels. Maureen was the Project Lead on the National ALTITUDE Charter development project.

Trudi Barnett is an independent Education and Quality Assurance specialist working across tertiary education. A QQI Report Writer and External Authenticator, she supports providers to design, validate, and strengthen programmes through accessible, learner-centred approaches informed by Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Her work brings together quality assurance, creative pedagogy, and participatory methods, including LEGO® Serious Play® and her developing Things Lab approach; using objects, metaphor, and making to help educators rethink teaching, learning, and assessment brick by brick. Trudi is currently completing an MA in UDL with Sligo ATU, an M.Ed with Maynooth University, writes for the international LEGO® Serious Play® Magazine and collaborates with ETBs, providers, and national stakeholders to translate policy into meaningful practice that supports participation, belonging, and authentic learning experiences.

Yvonne Sarsfield is a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Specialist at the UDL Centre of Excellence at Atlantic Technological University. She brings both academic expertise and extensive practical experience in embedding Universal Design for Learning and holds a Master’s degree in UDL.
An experienced Instructional Designer and passionate advocate for digital transformation in education, Yvonne has led projects integrating innovative and emerging technologies to enhance teaching and learning. She has extensive experience in instructional design and virtual learning environments, with particular expertise in designing accessible, engaging, and inclusive learning experiences. Yvonne also works closely with faculty to support the adoption of inclusive teaching practices and the meaningful integration of UDL principles.

Niamh Griffin is a third-year Children’s Studies student at the University of Galway with a strong commitment to accessibility and inclusion. For two years she served as the Accessibility Officer for the University of Galway’s Neurodivergent Society. In this role, Niamh represented neurodivergent voices on the University’s Physical Accessibility Forum.
Passionate about fostering inclusive environments, Niamh has actively championed numerous initiatives to enhance accessibility in the University, including the Calm Zone project. She was heavily involved in the collaborative process of planning and implementing the project.
Niamh is a dedicated advocate for inclusive design and practice that is accessible to all students within the university.
Izzy Tiernan, University of GalwayMiriam Collins University of Galway
Ms Miriam Collins is a third-year law and human rights student in the University of Galway. Her focus on human rights in her education combined with her lived experience as a disabled student in university has motivated her involvement in disability rights advocacy in the University of Galway and her interest in promoting universal design to overcome barriers to accessing higher education.
Miriam was involved with the university’s Neurodivergent Society from February 2024 to January 2025, first as an ordinary committee member and subsequently as the auditor of the society. She has represented the voice of neurodivergent students on the University’s Accessibility Forum advocating for greater sensory accessibility on campus and was heavily involved in the design and implementation of the Calm Zone during high stress periods and was a co-applicant for the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion fund to run the Calm Zone for the winter reading week and exam period. She is passionate about student staff collaboration and the incorporation of lived experience in service design and policy to improve accessibility for all students.

Izzy Tiernan is the former Vice President for Welfare and Equality in University of Galway Students Union 2023/24 and has had a keen interest in accessibility since they were diagnosed as neurodivergent five years ago. They helped create, design and execute University of Galway's new Calm Zone, and have worked as an advocate on behalf of students with disabilities, as well as themself. They are excited and thrilled to share their perspective on being neurodivergent in the workplace, college and in an activist role, as well as learning from experts in the field of accessibility. For Izzy, intersectionality, lived experience and empathy are the most important qualities to bring to any discussion around disability.

She holds an MSc in Social Research Methods from the London School of Economics and a First-Class Honours BA in Sociology and Social Policy from Trinity College Dublin. Throughout her studies, she was actively involved in student leadership, including roles within the Mature Student Society and Trinity’s S2S mentoring programme. She has also contributed to public policy dialogue as a member of the IIEA Emerging Voices Panel since 2018.

Siobhán Ayres is a PhD researcher at Dublin City University Business School (Ireland). Her research focuses on gender, the glass cliff, and self-selection into precarious leadership roles. Siobhán has unseen disabilities, including autoimmune illness (endometriosis), a rare lung condition (aspergillosis) and chronic pain (neck & lower back injuries resulting in spinal surgery & pain management).

Leah Ennis Mcloughlin is a Deaf final-year PhD researcher who uses Irish Sign Language and draws on her lived experience to advance accessibility and equity in higher education and science. Specialising in virology and infection biology, her work investigates viral infection mechanisms and host responses at the UCD Centre for Experimental Pathogen Host Research. A recipient of the Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship, she combines rigorous research with active outreach to Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in STEM. Through advocacy, mentoring, and her role as a LaunchPAD ambassador, she champions disability inclusion and strives for a more accessible and representative scientific community.

Hasrizal Abdul Jamil is a Malaysian educator and author based in Ireland, formerly Director of Education at Yayasan Pendidikan Khalifah and member of Malaysia’s National Education Policy Review Committee.Despite publishing 30 books, he struggled through five unsuccessful master’s attempts.Following an ADHD diagnosis in 2022, he returned to university and earned an M.Ed. in Diversity and Inclusion from Trinity College Dublin.His work is now grounded in Universal Design for Learning, shaping his advocacy for inclusive education.

She has extensive experience working in the higher education sector across a range of diverse roles, including academia, national policy and strategy, system performance, and research funding. Richard received has a PhD from Maynooth University. His research was informed by the current drug service user narrative in Ireland, primarily methadone maintenance treatment and he continues to advocate for the human rights of those who engage with Irish services. Most of this work is carried out with the Service User Rights in Action, a group of which Richard is a member. Richard works in AHEAD as Policy and Research Officer. He conducts research projects such as our annual participation rates data on students with disabilities engaged in disability support services and is responsible for writing policy submissions.

Dr Anne-Marie Butler leads the Teagasc education programme which is delivered through the agriculture and horticulture colleges and Teagasc education centres. The programme offers Level 5 and Level 6 courses and Higher Education apprenticeships in the land based sector. Teagasc Education also has long established collaborative links with the universities and institutes of technology in delivery of their Higher Education programmes. Prior to joining Teagasc, Anne-Marie worked with Ulster Bank where she held a leadership role as senior agriculture manager and relationship director. She qualified with first class honours in a Bachelor of Agricultural Science degree from UCD and went on to obtain a PhD from UCD, completing her doctorate research at Moorepark, under the Walsh Scholarships Programme. Dr. Butler also holds numerous financial qualifications, including a university diploma in financial services.
From a tillage farm in Freshford in Co. Kilkenny, she is a former president of the Agricultural Science Association (ASA), and honorary president (2021/2022) of IASTA, the Irish Agricultural Science Teachers' Association. She is Chair of the Agricultural Science development group for Leaving Certificate curriculum (2024-2026).

Karen Higgins is a senior academic leader specialising in teaching, learning, assessment, and academic quality enhancement within higher education. Karen has extensive experience in programme development and validation across NFQ Levels 5–8 and has led institution-wide initiatives in assessment strategy, academic integrity, inclusive pedagogy, and staff development. She is particularly interested in embedding enhancement-driven academic cultures that support innovative, student-centred learning and evidence-informed teaching practice.

Dr Bairbre Fleming, Director of UCD Access and Lifelong Learning, has extensive experience working with underrepresented students through the UCD Access programmes, with particular emphasis on mature students and part-time programmes. Her PhD drew on a sociological analysis of the experiences of mature students in higher education. Bairbre leads a team of access professionals who attract, support, and develop strategies for the students who come to UCD through a range of access routes. Bairbre is the current chair of the PATH Leinster Pillar 1 consortium which is collaborating to increase access to higher education for targeted under-represented groups.

With nearly 20 years of experience promoting and facilitating inclusive practices in higher education, Thomas has overseen research initiatives and local and national projects focused on inclusive practices, assistive technology, accessibility, and universal design. Additionally, he is a guest lecturer for several postgraduate courses. Thomas has authored publications in various fields, including assistive technology, accessibility, the third space, and universal design.

Tracy McAvinue has an academic background, having researched and taught in Literary Studies, earning her PhD in 2021. Her research area has been focused on marginalised writers and the need for diversity in literary studies and higher education. Tracy has organised events such as a seminar titled ‘Diversifying the Canon’, an international conference titled ‘Intersectional Irelands’, and seminars addressing inequities and employment precarity for early-career researchers in academia. She worked in the area of Disability Support Services and as Disability Access Route to Education advisor and is currently the Project Officer for Universal Design Inclusive Practice, involved in a number of projects developing inclusive practice in the University of Limerick. Sarah Peinelt is the Technology Integration Coordinator at MSLETB, supporting Moodle and digital learning across Further Education and Training. She develops training resources, leads technology-enhanced learning initatives, and works with educators and colleges to improve digital workflows, communication, and teaching practices through practical, accessible and innovation solutions.
Iris Kerssebeek
Iris Kerssebeck is Programme Manager for the Immersive Technology Apprenticeship with MSLETB and leads development of the new XR Hub in Sligo. With a background in design, digital media and immersive tech, she specialises in creating practical, real world learning experiences and collaborating with education, industry and skill bodies.

Alexa MacDermot University College Dublin
Alexa is a PhD candidate at University College Dublin. Her research, "Autistic and/or ADHD cisgender women, non-binary queer feminised people, and trans women in Ireland: Identity, Social Relations, and Employment experience" will be completed in 2028. She is a student board member for AHEAD Ireland, co-creates the UCD Neurodiversity Collective for students, and is a sensory-oriented visual artist using textiles and light.
Amber Thibeault University College Dublin
Amber (she/her) is a Master's Student at University College Dublin studying Gender Studies. Last May, she received her Bachelor's Degree at Colorado State University (CSU), with a double major in Gender and Ethnic Studies, as well as a minor in Indigenous Studies. While at CSU, she supported survivors of interpersonal violence and spoke at CSU's Feminist Queer Empowerment Conference. Her work with the Invisible Disabilities Club, in addition to her own personal and familial experiences, has been the foundation for her pursuit of inclusivity across all forums

Ann Kennedy City of Dublin FET College - Dhulaigh
Ann Kennedy is a Dublin-based educator and technology professional with over two decades of experience spanning engineering, IT, and further education in the City of Dublin FET College - Dhulaigh. She holds a B.Eng in Electronic Engineering from Dublin City University and a first-class M.Eng in Renewable Energy from Maynooth University.
Ann began her career as a Sort Product Engineer at Intel Ireland before moving into education, spending nearly twelve years as an IT teacher at City of Dublin FET Colleges - Dhulaigh, where she taught programming, networking, and Microsoft certification courses, and served as lead coordinator of the Fasttrack to IT programme.
In 2018, Ann returned to her passion for education, rejoining City of Dublin ETB where she currently teaches Computer Science and Engineering at QQI Levels 5 and 6. She is an active participant in the Erasmus+ GenAI4VET project, exploring the integration of generative AI in vocational education and training. Committed to inclusive practice, Ann earned her Universal Design for Learning (UDL) badge in 2023 and is currently pursuing a Master's in Diversity and Inclusion in Further Education and Training at Trinity College Dublin, with her thesis examining teacher attitudes to generative AI in FET.

Kayleigh McNamara Students with Disabilities Advisory Group 25/26
Kayleigh McNamara is a Social Studies and Youth Work Student in Galway Technical Institute. She has previous experience in disability activism being elected disability officer in 2024 and 2025 of the Irish Second-Level Students Union. Before this, Kayleigh began her advocacy in passion projects on reproductive health awareness. Her personal experiences of accessing education as someone with mobility impairments alongside her work experience in the area has Kayleigh hoping to work alongside members to promote equity for students with disabilities in further and higher education.

Cal De Nicolas is a 3rd BSc Psychology student at Maynooth University diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Having experienced the difficulties of navigating college as a neurodiverse individual, they have continuously argued for the rights of people with disabilities and are a strong advocate for equal opportunities within higher education and beyond. Their interest in intersectionality and human rights has led them to pursue placements in various settings including the EDI department at Maynooth University, where they reviewed the University's incoming EDI policy and in the February of 2026 Mental Health Reform and Exchange House Ireland.
Sean Byrnes,Elaine Aherne Students with Disabilities Advisory Group 25/26
Elaine is an autistic mature student (late diagnosed) studying for a BA in Criminology in UCC, Cork. She also serves as an Access Ambassador for students living disabilities, representing the student voice. Elaine is passionate about making society an inclusive and accessible place for all with a special interest in those with hidden disabilities. She has over 15 years' experience advocating for both mental health and disability entitlements rights both on a personal and professional basis. For fun, she loves exploring bookshops and watching strange art house films.
Sean Byrnes
Sean is a 21 year-old Business and Human Resource Management student in his third year at the University of Limerick. Born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, he brings a strong sense of resilience, perspective and purpose to both his studies and his advocacy work. As part of his degree, Sean is completing an eight month placement with the Universal Design & Inclusive Practice division in UL's centre for Transformative Learning, where he contributes to projects that promote accessibility and equity across the university community.
This year, Sean was delighted to join the students with Disabilities Advisory Group 2025/2026, a role that allows him to collaborate with peers who have diverse lived experience and to deepen his understanding of Universal Design in higher education in Ireland. Passionate about inclusion, Sean is committed to helping shape learning environments where every student can thrive.
